Gems are mined and processed in Central and Eastern Asia, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Egypt and Central America. Although there are indications that ancient Greeks, Romans and Byzantines, admired the stones and knew much about them, only a few attempts were made in Europe to process the stones and use them to create jewels.
